Leslie Martinez and Maria Olmedo, Parents of CSS Scholars

Recognizing that students thrive when they are fully supported at home and in school, College Success Scholars provides a variety of ways for parents and guardians to become involved in our work. Families are an integral part of CSS and are invited to participate in any of these activities.

Parents’ Involvement Working Group includes parents and caretakers of undergrads currently enrolled in CSS. Parents actively participate in program activities and committees until their scholars graduate from the University of Maryland.

The Parents’ Involvement Working Group:

  • Hosts an annual gala to showcase scholars’ work
  • Helps raise money for CSS
  • Plans academic, service learning, and professional development activities for scholars
  • Mentors first-year CSS families
  • Promotes family engagement
  • Supports the director and staff of the University of Maryland Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education

CSS Parents’ Executive Board coordinates and oversees the Parents’ Involvement Working Group. The role of the executive board is to:

  • Support the vision and mission of the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Education (OMSE) and the College Success Scholars program as led by the director
  • Work collaboratively and in partnership with the director and staff to achieve goals of the CSS program
  • Provide support to our scholars
  • Provide guidance on matters related to the administration of the CSS program

The executive board includes the following specific roles and activities:

  • Chairperson/Co-chairperson
  • Clerk/Assistant Clerk
  • Treasurer/Assistant Treasurer
  • Committees
    • Advocacy
    • Sunshine
    • Father and Son/Male Mentoring
    • Fund Development
    • Hospitality
    • Parent Engagement
    • Professional Development

Scholar Testimonials

Jovany Joya
Class of 2018

I truly believe that the CSS program has granted me with everything I need to be successful in school and in life as well. Without this program, I honestly feel that I would be struggling in school. But thanks to the brotherhood and resources that are provided to us, I am able to soar for achieving greatness. CSS has helped me develop into a more sophisticated, dedicated, and well-rounded man. I am thankful for having the opportunity to be in such a great program with other great scholars and a great director, Dr. Lester. I expect nothing but the best in the future for me and those in the program and I owe it all to this one-of-a-kind program–College Success Scholars.
