Internship Highlight – Moises Umanzor

Posted by Christopher Lester

Hello CSS Community: My name is Moises Umanzor and I am a senior majoring in Environmental Science and Technology. This past summer, I had the opportunity to participate in the Research Experience for Undergraduates Program (REU) at the University of Arizona, Biosphere 2. This research experience exposed me to the full spectrum of the research process.

My research experience spanned over 10 weeks (June 6th – August 12th 2016). I worked in Dr. Dontsova’s Biogeochemistry Lab with one of her PhD students. The focal point of the research project I worked on was, mineral weather processes in a lysimeter setting. Through this experience I gained an immense amount of knowledge on the chemical, physical, and biological processes that occur in soils. In addition, the lab experience I gained from the REU was very rewarding. I presented my research at a REU poster session and at the, highly regarded, American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting. After this research experience, I have decided to pursue a Master’s of Science upon graduating from the University of Maryland.

Scholar Testimonials

Kwabena Yamoah
Alumni

I have been a part of different campus organizations throughout my undergraduate years and even now, in my second year of medical school, and from my experiences thus far, there is no program that comes close to the academic and professional development programs offered by College Success Scholars (CSS). Not only did CSS help me develop high expectations, it provided the help I needed to meet those expectations. Through the counseling and workshops, I felt empowered to achieve my goals. Sometimes it was difficult to see the vision the leadership of CSS was trying to impart, but looking back now, I can see it. I am proud to be a CSS alumni.
