Congratulations Moises Umanzor! (National Soils Competition)

We would like to express our warmest congratulations to, senior scholar, Moises Umanzor on his National Soils Competition win! Moises and his team from the University of Maryland’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources took 1st place in the recent 57th National Soils Competition, where contestants from 24 universities from seven regions around the country inspected various soil pits and worked to correctly identify, evaluate and describe five soil profiles. Combined individual and group scores for the event put Maryland in 1st place overall, ahead of Kansas State (2nd), Univ. of WI Platteville (3rd), Purdue Univ. (4th) and Univ. of WI Stephens Point (5th).

This is the 4th time Maryland has won the national title over the 57 year history of the event. Pictured below is Moises and his winning team!

Nehemiah Emaikwu
Class of 2017

The College Success Scholars program has played a key role in shaping my personal, academic, and professional experiences at the University of Maryland, College Park. My first year in the program, I was well resourced with tutoring services, free printing, and a satellite office where I spent many hours studying and getting to know other scholars. The following year I had the opportunity to be a team leader. In that role, I was able to understand the behind-the-scenes work that drove the program forward and develop my communication and leadership skills. Continuing in that role this year, I have further developed those skills and cultivated a professional relationship with others in the program and in the OMSE office. Through the CSS program, I have truly grown and matured as a young male of color.
